Mythical Codes & Cubic Waves
Krista Augius’s Mythical Codes series delves into the intersection of ancient symbolism, visual perception, and neuroscience. Rooted in Lithuanian folkloric patterns and echoing motifs from Vedic and pre-Columbian traditions, these works reimagine sacred geometries through a contemporary lens. Each composition employs optical illusions and rhythmic symmetry to engage the viewer’s eye in a continuous search for completion—activating alpha brainwave states associated with meditation and deep relaxation. In this way, Augius fuses cultural preservation with cognitive engagement, transforming symbolic language into a tool for visual and neurological immersion.
This exploration evolved into the Cubic Waves series: a three-dimensional extension of her patterned language into acoustic art. Drawing from traditional Lithuanian weave designs, these sculptural panels merge form and function to shape the sonic environment of a space. Designed to absorb mid- to high-frequency sound waves, Cubic Waves enhances acoustic clarity while maintaining visual harmony. The tactile geometry disrupts standing waves and echoes, creating not only auditory refinement but also aesthetic cohesion.
Spanning from 2014 to 2025, the progression from Mythical Codes to Cubic Waves reflects Augius’s ongoing inquiry into how art can harmonize sensory experience—inviting viewers and listeners alike into a space of balance, resonance, and mindful presence.
